It is our pleasure to invite everyone to Mount Airy's most original art gallery. The Gallery Group and Art Studio, Inc. is a non-profit 501()(3) organization run completely by volunteers from our community. Our gallery is a gathering place for all ... combining the handicapped population and local community forming a new and unique society where we all share the creativity and joy of art. Local artists have joined the gallery to display their art and teach the handicapped population. We have a striking collection of local art as well as unusual pieces created by very extraordinary hands. We invite you to come and enjoy the atmosphere of the Gallery Group where the not-so-perfect are more than welcome.

A baker’s dozen of yarnspinners and music-makers from around the world gathers in Mount Airy each Spring as the Surry Arts Council presents Blue Ridge & Beyond, its annual festival of storytelling and music.

Featured tellers at previous Blue Ridge & Beyond festivals included Lloyd Wilson (African-American stories); Linda Fang (tales of the Orient); Felix Pitre (stories and songs from Puerto Rico); Mike Lowe (American and Celtic tales and legends); award winning Appalachian storyteller Orville Hicks and many more.

Crowds marveled at the traditional craftsmanship of tinsmith, Peter Blum. Los Viajeros band played its Mariachi music, and Chapel Hill’s own Shady Grove Band played Bluegrass in an earlier Blue Ridge & Beyond festival. Special rates are available for school and other groups.

Levering Orchard celebrated its 100th year in 2008! The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History educates visitors about the area referred to as "The Hollows," which is quite a fitting name in that the entire region rests in a saucer-like depression circled by mountains.

The panoramic view from the Museum’s Observation Tower captures the beauty of this mountainous circle, which includes the Blue Ridge Mountains, Slate Mountain, The Sauratowns, Pilot Mountain and Turner Mountain.

A tour of the Museum is a step back in time. Exhibits include subjects, such as the World’s Largest Open Face Granite Quarry, the Yadkin River, Saura Indians, The Original Siamese Twins, Andy Griffith Heritage, Tommy Jarrell, Model Railroad, The development of this community is not unlike that of most crossroads, rural areas, towns and cities across America. All had similar beginnings, yet each possesses unique qualities.

Mount Airy’s historic Downtown Cinema has been a popular source of entertainment for over six decades. Originally called the "Earle," this 450-seat movie house has screened most of Hollywood’s legendary films. On any given Saturday night, moviegoers would line up around the block on North Main Street to see their cinematic heroes on the theatre’s big screen. Going to see a "picture" at the Cinema was a real event.

The Cinema closed in the 1980s, a victim of the "multiplex" phenomenon. In 1990, Stewart and Everette Theatres, who owned the building, donated the Cinema to the Surry Arts Council. Dark for several years, the grand old theatre was in serious disrepair. With thousands of hours of volunteer help, the Surry Arts Council brought the Cinema back to vibrant life. Today, the Cinema is alive with activity. The arts council screens $3 movies five nights a week as well as hosts a variety of shows here. For movie listings, call 336-786-2222.

"The Hollows" is the name that defines the greater Mount Airy area because it is encircled by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Slate Mountain, The Sauratowns, Pilot Mountain and Turner Mountain.

Visitors can enjoy a great panoramic view of the mountains by visiting the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History’s clock tower located at 301 N. Main St. The museum is open: Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Small admission fee.

Stone Mountain is not immediately visible upon entering the park that bears its name, but this magnificent 600-foot granite dome is well worth the wait. Sunlight and shadows dance across a broad tapestry of stone. White-tailed deer emerge from the security of the forest to graze on meadow grasses at the mountain’s base. The scenery is only one attraction of the park.

Test your fly-fishing techniques in more than 17 miles of designated trout waters. Or with more than 16 miles of trails, take a hike in the park. Designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1975, Stone Mountain is bound on the north by the Blue Ridge Parkway and on the west by the Thurmond Chatham Game Lands. More than 13,747 acres of mountain beauty offer opportunities for outdoor activities of all kinds.

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Strudels is a European style bakery owned and operated by the Payson family. We make our home in what was the Stony Knoll Grocery, which was operated by the Coe family since 1961. The grocery was a local gathering place for the neighbors of the Stony Knoll and Rockford communities

The Payson family refurbished the building and opened Strudels in 2006, making a long time dream come to life. We are continuing the tradition of being a gathering place for the local communities, as well as for visitors from all over, who take a break from touring the local wineries, “Mayberry” and the Blue Ridge mountains to enjoy our creations.

Founded in 1999, Shelton Vineyards is the largest family-owned estate winery in North Carolina. Located in the Yadkin Valley near Dobson and Mt. Stony Knoll Vineyards are lifted high on the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains against a Carolina sun that creates a bouquet of aromatic wonders and pleasures. The development of a "delivering terroir" began on this "North Carolina Century Farm" in 1896 when the ancestors of Kathy Coe bought a tract of land in southern Surry County. In the early 1940s the vineyard area was cleared with hand tools and domesticated animals and put into cultivation.

Inspired by one man’s passion, along the foothills of the Yadkin Valley of North Carolina, lies Elkin Creek Vineyard. From the hand-hewed beams of the winery, to the hand-tendered estate vines, you will sense the rhythm of man in harmony with nature.
